Daigou Ersatzeinkauf by Su Qiyi

Cobalt by Leona Tiemessen and Vincent Carter

Companies located in China are controlling huge parts of the cobalt industry. They are mining the metal in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

Especially in small scale unregulated mines adults as well as children are working in dangerous conditions without healthcare and fair wages.

Cobalt is used for lithium-ion batteries that are powering our smartphones, laptops and electric vehicles. We often don’t think further than the ‚Made in China’-tag but we are indirectly exploiting workers in the DRC by buying these devices.

You can help by getting your devices repaired if they break or buying second hand. You can also support organizations like the Cobalt Institute that are demanding for public reports of cobalt supply chains, sustainability and addressing health and safety issues.
